about president obama and his engagement strategy because his readiness to talk to the enemy was, in some ways, one of the most distinguishing features of his presidential campaign and also of his time as president. reaching out to cuba, trying to negotiate with tirana, trying to reach out to syria. this is an unusual foreign-policy. and so i want to offer some thoughts on how that out reaches don and where it is likely to head in the months ahead. so, for starters, in trying to answer this question when and why peace breaks out i went back and read widely through history to find as many cases as i could where longstanding rivals found their way to peace, where they moved from anna .. and eddie. the earliest case i looked at is the foundation of switzerland in 1291 when three cantons in what is today the alpine region, longer enemies of each other, formed what became the swiss confederation. i looked at the formation of the iroquois confederacy in upstate new york which was born in 1450 in a small town that still exists today. these five iroquois tribes came together that have be

obama condemning moammar gadhafi's attacks on protesters and his vow to execute his enemies. the unrest, the violence and the threats exploding in libya this week. gadhafi acting and sounding as defiant and as dangerous as ever. the libyan leader appeared yesterday before seemingly supportive crowds in tripoli where his opponents have been largely scared off the streets. but outside the capitol opposition forces have been gaining ground moving closer and closer to gadhafi's power center. cnn's senior international correspondent ben wedeman is one of the few reporters inside libya. he's been in the midst of the protests in libya's second largest city benghazi. obama announcing economic sanctions against the regime saying the united states will freeze billions of dollars in government assets. the economic vice may get tighter. the united nations is holding a weekend session and they are debating a resolution that would impose their own sanctions. julie banderas is covering that angle. >> julie: they are honing to get a vote while there is a broad support for a draft resolution to impose international sanctions against muammar khadafy's government. some countries remain split over whether to refer the issue to the rarely used international criminal court. at a closed-door meeting, china right now is the only country still objecting to an immediate icc referral which would include an investigation of crimes against humanity committed by khadafy against his people since february 15th. the crackdown has resulted in the killings of at least a thousand civilians. meantime, the u.n. resolution was drafted by u.k. and france that would include an arms embargo freezing assets and a travel ban against khadafy, his family and top lieutenant commanders

who helped put us behind. tavis: what is there finally for a president obama or any president coming after him, to learn about not missing your moment historically? >> i think presidents or the sum total of all their experiences. i think that president obama and most presidents dealing in the modern era have the benefit of the civil rights movement, all different types of engagement with the population about rights and what the president needs as a leader in those areas. i think looking to history is imported to sort of not repeat the mistakes that people made in the past, and that is the value of history. i think that obama, from what i know of him, is a very careful student of history and understands the role that he has to play there. the terrible thing about johnson is that it is not that one man controls everything. but the president is a symbol. he exercises real power but also symbolic power. to have this person at the moment when they are trying to transform black lives to get up and say essentially, no, hold the line against that, he played a pivotal role in setting as back.
